New Images on Photos.com
View the imageWe recently added more than 1,000 new photos to the Photos.com collection. Let's start with a collection of high-end shots related to food. These are professional photos of food being prepared, beautifully presented final dishes, and the personalities involved in food preparation.

There are new portraits added every month, so no surprise there, but this time around people are also featured in a range of outdoor fitness and lifestyle scenarios. Also of note is a series devoted to a young businessman with attitude, closeups of architectural elements and machinery, flowers, and even a small set devoted to horses.

Finally, we added 130 computer-generated background images. For inspiration in how these can be used, we recommend browsing through a recent Photos.com Challenge on Graphics.com, which was based on these images.

Designer Spotlight: Julia Hughes
Designer Spotlight: Julia HughesJulia Hughes is something of a veteran, with more than 20 years of experience in the graphic design field. She's currently a designer with the Examiner newspaper, where her favorite task is to combine type and graphics using the Adobe Creative Suite.

When it comes to the creative process, Julia tells us that "Most often I start looking for a photo or graphic, then I look for the colours in the photo/graphic which I may then use in the typography or create some other graphic element using those colours. Sometimes the pic itself sparks off a design element which can be seen in the work I have submitted to this Spotlight."

The illustration at left was for a newspaper cover for a Winter Warmth feature. "I wanted something that would contrast cool colours with warm colour. I needed a lifestyle image and this one was perfect, since it shows a modern couple in a modern environment. The image didn't need to have a roaring log fire or any other method of heating, I just tried to convey warmth through the graphics without using the obvious warm colours you would normally associate with warmth."

The Fun Stuff
View the wallpaperAt left is one of the four August wallpaper and desktop calendar images, each of which is available in six resolutions. This pastel-tinted calendar image is the thing summer dreams are made of.

Recent Blurb items include a look at an unusual font release from P22 in RTF Stern: The Meeting of Digital and Hot Metal Type and coverage of the work of tablet-based subway portraitist Ed Velandria in The Eyes Have It.

The Photos.com Challenge
Photos.com ChallengeIn July, participants were given the challenge to use at least part of any three of six distinctive computer-generated backgrounds from the Photos.com collection as elements in an original work. Members seemed to be inspired by this imagery and responded with a wide range of original work. Congratulations to July winners Dennis Windt, Mtabor, Joe E, DavidMac, Beachbum and Wildbearchocolate.

For August we've provided five brass band instruments from the Photos.com collection. The challenge is to use at least part of any two of the six images in a new composition. The creators of three of the winning images will receive three months of access to Photos.com, while three more will receive one month.

August Freebies: trueSpace and ChocoFlop

trueSpaceFor many years, trueSpace has maintained its reputation as a competent Windows application for creating 3D content and animations. Recently the creative dropped its collective jaw thanks to the announcement that trueSpace was now... free! All we can say is, download it while you can.

Very different is ChocoFlop, a new Mac image editing application that is currently free while it's under development. It's no Photoshop but it may be all you need.

Photoshop Time-Savers: Creating Density Masks
Density masks are great for creating natural, organic edges (such as in fur, hair, or foliage) and are often easier to use than the Pen Tool. Topics covered include: refining masks, storing and using masks, creating composites, and using masked images in other applications.

The Designer's Role in Bringing a Brand to Life
Obviously, designers are responsible for the creation of arresting, effective visuals, but branding expert Jonathan Gouthier adds to that well-known role two others with which designers are generally less familiar: strategist and researcher. To help design professionals fulfill the demands of all three roles, Jonathan poses questions and challenges that will likely change how you think about the client/creative relationship.

InDesign Time-Savers: Text-on-Path Tricks
This video helps you master a slew of text-on-path tasks in Adobe InDesign, including starting with the ideal path, positioning text exactly where you want it (not where InDesign wants you to put it), threading text between paths, and many more...
