New Images on Photos.comView the image
Almost 5,000 new photos have recently been added to the Photos.com collection. A series of these is devoted to the theme of winter fun, depicting individuals and families engaged in a wide variety of camping and outdoor activities.

Up next is a large collection devoted to young people making and listening to music. And when they're not into music, they're into... well, all kinds of things, as shown in this generous batch of shots devoted to teenagers having a pretty good time. You'll also find hundreds of fresh shots of young children, including some great mother-and-child photos.

Also notable is a group devoted to cars in all their aspects, from car wrecks to car washes to car repair. And while the housing market may not be what it once was, it's somehow reassuring to browse through the new collectiion of shots of contemporary loft and condo living spaces. Well, we can dream, can't we? Finally, we've added hundreds more medical photos, this time with an emphasis on people, both patients and personnel.

Designer Spotlight: Gus Proctor
Designer Spotlight: Gus Proctor Roland Proctor, aka Gus, is in his fifth year as a Photos.com subscriber. Gus has worked on a variety of daily regional newspapers as a graphic artist, producing information graphics since 1989 and is currently working on The Courier and Advertiser based in Dundee, Scotland, as a graphic artist/designer.

How does he do it? "Working to tight, daily deadlines, I sometimes wonder how I manage to put together the finished article, but I do. Inspiration is all around, but the photograph usually speaks volumes. I always look for picture power!"

The image at left, the cover of a 12-page Christmas television and radio guide, is a good example of this, making effective use of two Photos.com images of ball and star ornaments.

I am ChocoFlop, hear me roar!Freebies: RealWorld Paint.COM and ChocoFlop
RealWorld Paint.COM is the unlikely name of a free Windows image-editing application. While providing reasonable functionality, since it supports most Photoshop-compatible plugins you can take advantage of the many good free plugins to extend its capabilities.

ChocoFlop (okay, that's also a weird name) is a pure Mac image editor, with a surprisingly broad range of functionality, including non-destructive editing, a wide selection of filters and plugins, rich text layers and even support for Photoshop files.

Google maps may keep you from getting lost and confused, but these always accessible, highly accurate directions can also suck a little adventure from your journey. The Hand-Drawn Map Association reminds us that geography has as much to do with the human experience as finding a destination. The group's online collection includes fantasy locations, personal notes and incoherent squiggles. And they're looking to expand the arsenal: Submit your own sketches or direction-giving attempts by April 30 for the chance to be included in the group's upcoming book for Princeton Architectural Press.
