The most widely available biography of Amand Domènech calls him a "poster artist, illustrator and designer of all manner of graphic support media." Domènech was born in 1920 in Barcelona, the city where he, in 1939, began his education at the Municipal School of Arts and Professions under the tutelage of landscape painter Domingo Soler Gili. At the age of 20, he embarked on his professional career. He always accredited part of his education to the time he spent working as a plate burner for the Manent graphics workshops. Domènech first struck out on his own in 1949.
Much like other fellow designers from his generation, including Artigas, Pedragosa and Pla-Narbona, Domènech also had a "Swiss period" that lasted from 1960 to 1962, when he was invited to perform an "internship" with the prestigious Klausfelder studio in Vevey.
Domènech was a founding member of the FAD Graphics Arts Group and ICOGRADA, which he presided over as vice president in 1985. He is also once of the select group of Spanish designers who have designed a cover for Graphis (no. 104, 1962), the Swiss journal that served for decades as the journal of reference for the industry and an unparalleled forum for learning about the work and trends of the best graphic design professionals from all over the world.
In 1964, he began teaching as a professor of advertising art at the Massana School; later moving on to the Official Advertising School (1968) and the Faculty of Information Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1987).
