| In this tutorial, you’ll give a regular color photo a comic book effect by using the Threshold
adjustment layer to convert it to a high-contrast, black-and-white image and
generate an outline. You’ll also use a variety of tools, including Burn, Brush and Magic Wand.
|
|
Download comic.jpg, launch Photoshop and open the file. Press F7
to show the Layers palette.
Click the Create New Fill
or Adjustment Layer button
and select Channel Mixer
from the drop-down menu.
In the resulting Channel
Mixer dialog box, click the
Monochrome button, use
the options shown and
click OK.
|
|
Click the Create New Fill
or Adjustment Layer button
and select Threshold from
the drop-down menu. Use
the options in the resulting
Threshold dialog box and click OK.
|
|
Set the Opacity of the
Threshold layer to 50%.
Drag the Background layer
to the Create New Layer
button to duplicate it.
Select the Burn tool. Use
the options in the resulting
Options bar and
repeatedly paint over any
areas that lack detail (i.e,
the sweater) to bring back
some detail and edging. Set
the Opacity of the Threshold
layer back to 100%. |
|
Select the Background
copy layer. Click the Create
New Layer button. Press D
to set Default colors (black
foreground, white background).
Select the Brush
tool (B). Using a small hardedged
brush, paint around
the woman’s eyes, nose,
mouth and fingers to create
smoother lines.
Press X to make White the
Foreground color. Paint over
any unwanted lines to further
clean up the image. |
|
Select the Threshold layer.
Select the Magic Wand tool
(W). Use the options in the
resulting Options bar.
Click the black color of
the image. Choose Select
> Save Selection. Use the
options in the resulting Save
Selection dialog box and click OK. Choose Select
> Deselect (Command + D). |
|
Click the Create New Layer
button. Set the Layer Mode
to Multiply. In the toolbar,
click the foreground color
sampler. In the resulting
Color Picker dialog box,
enter C:0; M:25; Y:50; K:25,
and click OK. Using the
Brush tool (B), paint the
woman’s skin. |
|
Drag Layer 2 to the Create
New Layer button to
duplicate it. In the toolbar,
click the foreground color
sampler. In the resulting
Color Picker dialog box,
enter C:0; M:52; Y:72; K:0,
and click OK. Press Option
+ Shift + Delete. Click the
Add Layer Mask button.
Choose Filter > Sketch >
Halftone Pattern. Use the
Options in the resulting
Halftone Pattern dialog box and click OK. |
|
Hold Option and place the
cursor over the line between
Layer 2 and Layer 2 copy.
When an interlocking circle
appears, click to create a
clipping group.
Select Layer 2. Choose
Select > Load Selection.
Use the options in the
resulting Load Selection
dialog box and click OK. Press Option
and click the Add Layer
Mask button. |

Continue adding color, dots and a thought
bubble to complete the
effect so that it looks similar
to our result (click to enlarge). |
