Download the glow.psd file, launch Photoshop and open the file. Press D to set Default colors (black foreground, white background). Press F7 to show the Layers palette. Click the Create New Layer button. Command-click Layer 1 thumbnail. Press Option + Delete to fill the selection with Black. Choose Select > Deselect (Command + D). Drag Layer 1 to the trash.
Choose Image > Mode > Grayscale and click Don’t Flatten. Choose Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Use the options in the resulting Gaussian Blur dialog box and click OK.
Choose Image > Mode > Bitmap and click OK to flatten layers. Use the options in the resulting Bitmap dialog box and click OK. Use the options in the resulting Halftone Screen dialog box and click OK. Choose File > Save As and save the file as a TIFF.
To complete the effect we placed the TIFF file in InDesign and colored it, then placed the original image on top, as shown at left.
