Type as a design element can carry the intended theme, deliver a clear message and add visual impact, along with interest and appeal. To create this text effect, you’ll use one of Photoshop’s more popular filters, Motion Blur. The technique of motion works amazingly well on images, but it is also very effective on text. You’ll apply the Motion Blur filter on multiple layer copies to blur them and then use the creative Stylize filter. Using the Wind filter creates a directional blur and the illusion of movement. Lastly, you’ll add a Drop Shadow to the text to complete the effect.

Download the typeinmotion.psd file and open it in Photoshop. Press F7 to show the Layers palette. Drag Layer 1 to the Create New Layer button to duplicate it.
In the toolbar, click the foreground color sampler. In the resulting Color Picker dialog box, enter C:78; M:0; Y:13; K:0, and click OK. Press Option + Shift + Delete to fill the type with blue. Drag Layer 1 copy to the Create New Layer button to duplicate it. Drag Layer 1 copy 2 to the Create New Layer button to duplicate it, so that the Layers palette appears as shown at left.
Select the Zoom tool (Z). Select Layer 1 copy. Choose Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Use the options in the resulting Motion Blur dialog box and click OK.
Select Layer 1 copy 2. Choose Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Use the options in the resulting Motion Blur dialog box and click OK.
Select Layer 1 copy 3. Choose Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Use the options in the resulting Motion Blur dialog box and click OK.

Press Shift and select Layer 1 copy 2 and Layer 1 copy so that all three blurred copies are selected. Press Command + E to merge the layers.
Choose Filter > Stylize > Wind. Use the options in the resulting Wind dialog box at far left and click OK.

Choose Filter > Stylize > Wind. Use the options in the resulting Wind dialog box at left and click OK.
Drag Layer 1 to the top of the palette. Click the Add Layer Style button and select Outer Glow from the drop-down menu. In the resulting Outer Glow dialog box, use the options shown and click the Color Swatch. In the resulting Color Picker, enter C:0; M:0; Y:0; K:100, and click OK.
Click Drop Shadow under Styles on the left side of the palette. Use the options in the resulting Drop Shadow dialog box and click OK.
Use this technique to make an eye-catching ad, poster or banner as shown in our example at left (click to enlarge).
