| InDesign doesn’t normally allow gradients to be applied to placed images, but this technique can help you get around that to create an eye-catching effect.

Launch InDesign. Choose File > New > Document (Command + N). For Page Size, select Letter and click OK. You can use an image of your choice or download the blend.tif one used here. Choose File > Place (Command + D), select file blend.tif (or your image) and click Open. When the Loaded Graphics icon appears, click anywhere on the document to place the file. Select the Direct Selection tool (A) and click the image. Choose Window > Swatches (F5) and set the Fill to Paper.
Select the Selection tool (V) and click the image. In the Swatches palette, click the Options arrow and select New Gradient Swatch from the drop-down menu. In the resulting New Gradient Swatch dialog box, click the left Color Stop, select Swatches for Stop Color and select the Magenta swatch. Click the right Color Stop, select the C:100; M:90; Y:10; K:0 swatch and click OK.

Choose Edit > Edit Original. Photoshop will automatically launch and the original bitmap file will open. Choose Image > Adjustments > Invert (Command + I). Choose File > Save (Command + S). Return to the InDesign document and the file will automatically be updated. Choose Edit > Deselect All (Command + Shift + A). Choose View > Hide Frame Edges (Command + H).
