Illustrator Fundamentals: Create a Rough Line Effect

Launch Illustrator and open desired file—we used the image at right. Press F7 to show the Layers palette. Click the Visibility (eye) icon next to the Outlines layer to hide it. Choose Select > All (Command + A). Choose Object > Rasterize. Use the options in the resulting Rasterize dialog box and click OK.

Choose Filter > Brush Strokes > Spatter. Use the options in the resulting Spatter dialog box and click OK. In the Layers palette, click the Visibility square next to the Outlines layer to reveal it. Choose Select > Deselect (Command + Shift + A).

Using the Selection tool, (V) click the black outline. Choose Object > Rasterize. In the resulting Rasterize dialog box, use the same options from Step 1 and click OK. Choose Filter > Brush Strokes > Spatter. Use the options in the resulting Spatter dialog box (below) and click OK. Choose Select > Deselect (Command + Shift + A).
