Illustrator Fundamentals: Add Transparency to Patterns

Launch Illustrator and using the Selection tool (V) select the object you want to fill with a pattern. In the example, we clicked the woman’s shirt. Choose Edit > Copy (Command + C). Choose Edit > Paste in Front (Command + F).
Choose Window > Swatch Libraries > Default_CMYK. Click the Azure Rings swatch.
Choose Window > Transparency (Shift + F10). Use the options in the resulting Transparency palette. Choose Select > Deselect (Command + Shift + A).
The final effect is shown at left (click to enlarge). Experiment with other swatches and Transparency options to create your own unique style.
