Adding a Lens Flare Effect in Adobe Illustrator

You can work through this tutorial using your own image, or you can download the starter image we used. Launch Illustrator and open the desired file. Using the Group Selection tool (A), click the outside edge of the art (below). Choose Edit > Copy (Command + C). Press F7 to show the Layers palette. Click the Create New Layer button (far below). Click the Edit column next to Layer 1 to lock it. Choose Edit > Paste in Front (Command + F). Choose Select > Deselect (Command + Option + A).
Select the Flare tool. Click the center of the sun. Use the options in the resulting Flare Tool Options dialog box and click OK.
Choose Object > Arrange > Send to Back (Command + Shift + [ ). Choose Select > All (Command + A). Choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make (Command + 7). Choose Select > Deselect (Command + Option + A).
