| You can apply the following simple steps to a photo or an illustration to get an ‘aged’ appeal. This effect, using a few of Photoshop’s filters and textures, will add ‘years’ of imperfections by replacing the image’s crisp appearance with one that makes it look like it’s been around for awhile.

Download weathered.psd, launch Photoshop and open the file. Press F7 to show the Layers palette. With Layer 2 selected, click the Add Layer Mask button. Option-click the Layer Mask thumbnail.
Press D to set Mask Default colors (white foreground, black background). Choose Filter > Render > Clouds.
Choose Image > Adjust ments > Brightness/Contrast. Use the options in the resulting Brightness/Contrast dialog box and click OK.
Choose Filter > Texture > Grain. Use the options in the resulting Grain dialog box and click OK.
Choose Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint. Use the options in the resulting Mezzotint dialog box and click OK.
Choose Edit > Fade Mezzotint (Command + Shift + F). Use the options in the resulting Fade dialog box and click OK.
Choose Filter > Brush Strokes > Spatter. Use the options in the resulting Spatter dialog box and click OK. Option-click the Layer Mask thumbnail to see the result.
Select Layer 1. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to add the weathering effect to this layer as well. The final effect is shown at left.
