In this tutorial I'll show you how to add a sepia effect to just the shadow areas on an image. I began with the photo at left.
Duplicate the current layer (Ctrl+J)
With the top layer selected, use the Hue/Saturation tool (Ctrl+U) to apply the following properties:

Colorize: Checked
Hue: 25
Saturation: 25
Lightness: 0

Use the Variations filter (Image > Adjustments > Variations) to adjust the tone of the sepia.
Add a layer mask to the current layer (Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All).
With the layer mask selected, use the Apply Image tool (Image > Apply Image) to apply the following properties:

Layer: Background
Channel: RGB
Invert: Checked
Blending: Normal
Opacity: 100%

Use the Brightness/Contrast tool (Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast) to tweak the visiblity of the sepia effect.
The final effect is shown at left.
