Win/Mac: New Font Releases: Civilite, Paris, Client Mono and Modesto
Posted on Thursday, July 16
We take a look at P22's Civilite Suite, Kapitza's Paris people silhouette font, Gestalten's Client Mono and FontShop's Modesto.

Civilite
The P22 Civilite Suite of fonts, designed by Colin Kahn with assistance from Richard Kegler and Milo Kowalski, combines revivals of the 16th century non-connecting script known as Civilite (civ-il-it-tay), with modern renditions derived from it. The full history is an interesting and complex one, and worth perusing on P22's site, but the end result is a suite of fonts that includes both "historical" and "modern" styles in basic OpenType format, and Pro versions that combine historical, modern and sorts into one OpenType font with alternates, expanded language coverage and Pro features, such as Contextual swash variations that place ornamental swash characters at the beginning or end of words. The Civilite family of 26 fonts starts at $19.95 and can be purchased on the P22 site.

Paris
We've covered many of the symbol font releases from British design partnership Kapitza on Graphics.com over the years. The latest release, Paris, is a silhouette font following in the line of previous people fonts such as Manhattan and Victoria Lane. It was created from hand-drawn illustrations, resulting in clean outlines with a minimum of vector points. Nicole and Petra Kapitza describe the inspiration for the font: "Walking around Paris looking for inspiration for our latest people font, we encountered chic Parisians, yummy food markets, and bakeries on virtually every street corner with delicious baguettes and pastries. We were surprised how many people were cycling, motorcycling and rollerblading along the vast boulevards and side streets of Paris. We spotted classic French cars like the 2CV and Citroën CX and watched the world go by in one of the many sidewalk cafes whilst enjoying a 1664 or a café crème." Consisting of 64 characters, the OpenType format font can be purchased on the Kapitza site for £89.

Client Mono
Client Mono is a mono-spaced typewriter-inspired font family created by Olof Lindqvist and Sebastian Wadsted, two young Swedish designers. The font, available in Light, Regular and Bold, can be used in both small point sizes for editorials as well as large headlines, with its rounded corners giving the font a modern look. Single weights of Client Mono can be purchased on the Gestalten site for 40 euros.

Modesto
Known for his logos and type creations for such clients as Hallmark Cards, Rolling Stone and the Ringling Bros., Jim Parkinson switched to an all-digital workflow way back in 1990. FontShop recently scored something of a coup by being able to offer his personal font collection, which contains more than a few gems. One of the standouts is Modesto, a Copperplate killer that evolved from Parkinson’s lettering on the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus logo. The Modesto family includes three widths, outlined and inlined caps, and a set of text fonts with lowercase. Take that, Copperplate! Modesto is available on the FontShop site in PostScript format for Mac and Windows, as individual fonts or in a package of eight for 216 euros.
