The plugins are available for Mac and Windows versions of Photoshop CS2 and CS3.
As the quality of digital cameras continues to increase, traditional graphics formats such as JPEG are less appropriate for handling the full range of available image data. Accordingly, last summer Microsoft introduced its HD Photo format as a way of providing photographers with an improved flavor of JPEG, along with free Photoshop plugins to support it. Apparently not afraid of taking on a behemoth like Microsoft, Trellis Management has now introduced XDepth, an image and video compression solution with the goal of providing precision and color depth that goes beyond the capabilities of JPEG.
The interesting twist is that XDepth isn't a replacement for JPEG but instead adds the ability to compress High Dynamic Range images in such a way that the resulting files can still be manipulated and displayed by applications and browsers in the usual manner. Future implementations of the XDepth technology are said to support 48-bit/pixel images, while maintaining full compatibility with JPEG. Currently available for free download are Photoshop plugins supporting XDepth, as well as an XDepth ActiveX Control for Internet Explorer, which allows website owners to provide real-time exposure control for HDR photos in web galleries. |
