Brown Deer, WI – PKWARE, Inc., the leader in Trusted ZIP Solutions™, has released a free PKZIP Reader for MS Windows-based PCs that makes it possible for anyone to open any ZIP file as well as decode highly secure ZIP files created using PKZIP 5.0 Professional Edition. The free PKZIP Reader enables enterprises, government organizations and individual users to immediately make widespread use of the strong encryption capabilities of PKZIP 5.0 Professional Edition to transmit critical data securely to any recipient using email or other transfer methods.
The free PKZIP Reader reflects PKWARE's commitment to ubiquitous security by ensuring the greatest number of people can benefit from the new strong encryption algorithms (up to 3 DES 168-bit or AES 256 bit encryption) built into the latest version of PKWARE's award-winning data compression application. With PKZIP 5.0 users can automatically include a link to the free reader, enabling any recipient of a strongly encrypted ZIP file to easily download the free PKZIP Reader software and use either a password or digital certificate to decrypt and decompress the contents of a secure ZIP file. The combination of PKZIP 5.0 and the free PKZIP Reader offers the quickest and easiest way to achieve the highest level of security for transmitting and storing sensitive information. PKZIP Reader is also forward compatible with future versions of Secure ZIP solutions for Windows, UNIX, OS/400 and MVS.
"Disseminating sensitive information is typically a one-to-many affair with recipients bearing the burdensome costs and complexities of managing secure data transmissions," said Chris Christiansen, IDC Vice President of Security Products and Infrastructure Software. "With the introduction of the PKZIP Reader, PKWARE reduces that burden by offering a way for all intended recipients to access, decompress, and decipher strongly encrypted and compressed files easily and at no cost."
"Because of the immediate and vital need for secure and efficient file transfer, we've provided a free reader people can start using today to receive secure ZIP files -- and not have to wait until other vendors develop and ship security enabled ZIP products of their own," said Steve Crawford, chief marketing officer of PKWARE. "PKWARE continues to drive the development of the ZIP file format, and our reader product will continue to evolve as new functionality is added to future versions of PKZIP."
PKZIP 5.0 Professional offers high performance and high efficiency data compression coupled with support for multiple levels of security, as well as automatic compression, digital signing and encryption for Microsoft Outlook users. When compressing files, PKZIP gives the user a choice of assigning a password and/or a digital certificate (when available) to encrypt the files. The user may also choose to digitally sign every file in a ZIP file archive, as well as the archive itself. In essence, PKZIP turns a traditional ZIP file into a secure data container for the purpose of efficient and secure storage or transmission. While PKZIP is compressing a group of files, it is also simultaneously applying access control (with passwords or certificates) and security (with strong encryption).
ZIP compression technology is the de facto method for storing and exchanging large data files. While others may offer ZIP-compatible software, only PKWARE sets the ZIP standard and delivers enterprise-strength solutions across multiple enterprise platforms with the service and support enterprise customers require.
Availability The free PKZIP Reader is available now for all Windows platforms, and can be downloaded from the web site www.pkzip.com/reader. |
