Totally of off topic...
Made a quick terrarium today, largish jar, fill lid with a bit of soil, find some moss and a couple of small plants, arrange and dribble a little water. Lower jar carefully over plants and screw onto lid...

This of course is a photoshoped version (couldn't help myself)

they don't need watering apparently.

Nice Jos, I like the cracks background and the strong blues at the base.

If it doesn't need watering it must get moisture from the air. Can fresh air get in, or doesn't it need it?

(as you can probably tell, I am not much of a gardener)

It's a sealed environment so no water can evaporate.
I imagine some wide large jars would make amazing examples.

Jos,

Very cool idea. I rather like the finished image it looks like it would make a good prop for Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog.

Um...but plants need CO2 and then produce oxygen...?

That's what I thought, but Jos is a gardener and will probably have the answer.

Maybe the plant creates its own micro-climate.

Jos - what plant is it. I'd like to see the photo without the effects. icon_smile.gif

I 'think' its either a Pepperoma or a Caladium of some kind but Jos will know.

Love the image and the blue top and bottom. Nice job of framing Jos.

Phantastic idea, Jos, and very nicely arranged!
Although I'm wondering too how these plants can survive?

As the plant consumes all the carbon dioxide in the jar it will eventually begin to die and rot at which point it will begin to give off the much needed gas.

This cycle will continue with parts of the plant dieing off and others coming back to rejuvenate itself in a cycle that will eventually drive the plant mad.

If you listen carefully you can hear the screams of torment off in the distance. icon_wink.gif

aha!
thx for the explanation, Tom, that's quite interesting.
Of course I'm wondering now if Mr. Nigel Gnome himself will set this plant free again or if he will sit together with the plant in this jar
and suffer the same doom - loosing a little arm here, growing a third foot there and slowly going mad... icon_twisted.gif

For some reason I didn't think Nigel was one to sit still for long. I thought he was usually gnoming around causing mischief and by gnome means a garden type gnome.
