Hi-
I'm hoping someone can suggest a method of removing text on a football. The pattern of the dots on a football are irregular which makes it hard to use the clone tool. How would you remove designs and copy on this irregular pattern?

thanks for your help!

Hi Daisy, welcome to the forums.
Are you able to post an image for us to have a look at. Though I imagine the clone or healing brush used up close and carefully may well be the only answer...

Hi Jos-
This is my first post so I have no clue how to post an image. Here is a link to a football located in google images. Let me know if this helps.
thanks!

I have to agree with Jos, that might have to be done with a clone tool. I did a quick search and most of the footballs, North American style, have the brand or team name applied differently than the rest of the ball. That is the ball itself has a texture and wherever the name is on the ball is applied or stamped on without a texture.

If the ball has the name just painted on you might be able to copy the name to a new layer and use the color replace tools and such to eliminate the name.

Hope that helps.

Well I guess we posted almost on top of each other. So, this is an edit.

You could try as I suggested above copy the name area to a new layer and do a color replace on the black and the gold. From the looks of things though there is going to be some cloning going on. Some of the text is actually debossed into the surface eliminating the texture so the only way around it is going to be via cloning.

Yep, if that's like the football you need to remove the text from, then you are going to have to clone a fair bit, can be done though, just will take a wee bit of time.
To show us an image of yours, you will need to host the image at somewhere like http://www.imageshack.us the service is free, you then copy the line of code (for forums) and paste it in your post when you reply.

I think you are both right in that I need to do some cloning. I tried this and it's really hard with this pattern. If you place what you cloned down ever so slightly off you can easily tell. I think to clone this correctly I would need the new feature in the CS4 version. I saw someone demo it at a photo event 2 weeks ago. In the new CS4 when you pick the area to copy it grabs it and shows you what is in your circle so it's easier to properly place it down in the right spot. You can see how everything lines up before placing it. I was hoping there was another way!! icon_sad.gif Have any of you used this new feature in CS4?

Thanks for your help!

CS4 has a new tool that does this? I went looking and I can't seem to find it. If you know what it's called and I'll take another look in mine. But, I did remember one that will help with the pattering and that's the patch tool. Which does a pretty admirable job on copying over the pattern. I didn't have a lot of time to try it out tonight but I copied over reasonably large chunks over the name on the ball and with a little dodge and burn you'd probably be able to nail it. I posted a quick and dirty version, reduced in size, this was done in about fifteen minutes including the typing. icon_wink.gif There's probably about a dozen patch grabs which can be done in CS3 and a brief pass on the right with a low opacity dodge tool.

The clone and healing brush in CS4 both show an active preview of what you have sampled, it allows you to line it up really well. I found it a bit disconcerting at first, but have quickly come to love it.

Guess I'm going to have to pull my head out of a programming book for an hour or two an have a run through the changes in tools in the new version.

no idea what this is all for, but here is another way, for the lazy designer.......ask the guys on this site, if you can mix'n'match their plain coloured ball with the one you've got there?????

I cleaned it up with the healing brush... whether or not it's good enough for what you need... <shrug>. If it suits your needs and you want to use the full-size image its here

Thanks Ladysaaphire and MadMutant for testing it.
MadMutant, I like how you lightened the right side with the dodge tool. I guess if I'm patient I can make it work. I plan to blow it up and use it as a texture within something. That's why I'm more afraid of the imperfections showing up. Did any of you use the new CS4 clone tool on your tests?
thanks!!!

I used CS3. Question: If you're merely looking for the texture why not change your search for just the texture?
http://www.sxc.hu/browse.phtml?f=view&id=497678 This is a good one of just the texture.

If all you need is the texture batman's icon_wink.gif suggestion is a good one. I did test out the CS4 clone tool a la Jos's suggestion and it works pretty good with the preview. I found if I was zoomed in a fair bit, at least 200% I was better able to see the results.

Based on playing with it I'd probably still start with the patch tool then tweak with the clone and burn/dodge.
