Of course, flight simulator enthusiasts are the primary users of FlightGear, which was launched in 1997. But it also provides a wide range of creative possibilities and has found favor for everything from research in universities to interactive exhibits in museums. It has been developed over the years by a worldwide group of volunteers to the point where it now features more than 400 aircraft, a worldwide scenery database, a multi-player environment, detailed sky modeling, a flexible and open aircraft modeling system, varied networking options, multiple display support, a powerful scripting language and an open architecture. Impressive for an open source initiative. Large download.
