Tonality Pro Updated for Mac B/W Photo Effects

Macphun has a history of releasing Mac graphics applications such as Snapheal Pro, Intensify Pro and FX Photo Studio Pro. The idea behind Tonality is far from original, since it allows users to add effects to monochrome images based on analog film processes and lens effects, along with grain simulation, a glow engine and tones. Simply choose from one of the many presets and you're done or tweak the parameters as desired. If this sounds similar to Alien Skin Software's Exposure, Nik's Analog Effects, The Plugin Site's B/W Styler or DxO's FilmPack, that's because it should.

Users will typically start by importing a RAW image, with a proprietary 16-bit processing engine helping to maintain image quality. Macphun claims to have included "the world's most diverse collection of presets," which is definitely an advantage. Going beyond presets, tools include Adaptive Exposure, Luminosity, Smart Contrast, Shadow Recovery, and Clarity & Structure, with layers, masking, blending modes and support for pressure-sensitive devices making selective adjustments an integral part of the workflow — as Macphun puts it, "No need to switch to Photoshop." Color Filters operate on both Luminence and Saturation, with Split Toning available to add different color tints to highlights and shadows. And let's not overlook textures, vignettes, frames and a grain engine, which can also be tapped to add more zip to your images. Once completed, images can be exported to the usual formats, including TIFF, PSD and JPG.

Version 1.4 adds a preset library said to be created by professional photographers; the ability to export images directly from Tonality to the 500px online photography community, along with a free 3-month membership; support for additional cameras; the ability to export images from Tonality to Aurora HDR; improved Lightroom and Photoshop export; enhanced language translation quality; and improved stability.

Tonality Pro for Mac can be purchased for $69.99. More information and a trial version of the Pro version is available on the Macphun site.
