Call for Entries: 2016 Wally Synthetic Paper Award

YUPO is a synthetic material that provides the attributes of paper while adding durability, as well as wear, stain, chemical and tear resistance. The result is a sheet that lends itself to particular printing, converting and packaging applications, such as menus, maps and game boards. More exotically, one of the earlier Wally award winners consisted of an origami-style reusable sushi plate. And one of the more interesting variations is YUPO Octopus, which employs micro-suction technology — tiny suction cups formed on one side are said to grip any flat, smooth surface. Such a different material naturally requires a different kind of award.

Now in its twefth year, the somewhat outré Wally Awards (see above) will be bestowed on entries that embody creativity, functionality and originality, as well as inspired use of YUPO papers. Categories this year include Best Design, Best Package and Best Artist, with inning designs being featured on the Yupo website and receiving a full-page article in Graphic Design USA. Entries will be on display at the 2016 HOW Design Live conference in May, with attendees able to vote for their favorites.

Full contest information is available on the Yupo Corporation site, which also displays entries from previous competitions. Winning entries from the most recent competition in 2014 are shown below.

Best Package - Mrs. Prindable’s Natural Caramel used YUPO’s 62 lb translucent paper for its reflective print quality and its ability to hold color. The material allowed enough transparency to see through the box while offering the flexibility to be scored and wrapped around the box and finished with an adhesive strip. Finally, Mrs. Prindable’s used YUPO paper because of its tear resistance.

Best Artist - Julie Armstrong found YUPO’s non-porous nature was the perfect paper to use for her Original Artwork because her alcohol-based inks sit on top of the paper giving it vibrant color and the ability to move the ink around to achieve an organic feel.

Best Design - For an in-store promotion in its flagship store windows, NIKE, INC. sought to create a print with vibrant colors while ensuring beautiful clarity where there was no ink for light to pass through. Clampitt Paper produced the graphics on huge rolls of YUPOJelly™, an optically clear product. The images depicted a modern street art motif with splashes of paint and ‘Supercharged Game’ emblazoned in bright white letters. Clampitt Paper noted that the prints were easy to install.
