2016 Drone Photography Contest Winners Announced

From being viewed initially as a novelty, drone photography has quickly advanced to the point where it's now as serious a form of photography as any other. Dronestagram, a community for drone photography fans, recently announced the winners of its third annual International Drone Photography Contest, which received more than 6,000 submissions in the Travel, Adventure-Sports and Nature-Wildlife categories. Winners were chosen by a panel of judges on the basis of their success in meeting the criteria of creativity and photographic quality.

Prizes included publication in the National Geographic magazine, drones and cameras. Fcattuto's first prize-winning photo in the Travel category, of the basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, is shown above, with the other winners below. While the quality of the shots is high, much of the imagery has a deja vu feeling to it. For drone photography to continue to move forward, perhaps next year's competition might benefit from shots with more daring and freshness? More information is available on the Dronestagram site.
